Report: Ex-Giant Manningham Set To Meet With Big Blue

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It has worked before, so why not?

That might be what the Giants are thinking after word surfaced over the weekend that former Big Blue wide receiver and current free agent Mario Manningham was set to visit his old team on Monday, the Daily News reported.

Manningham, 27, was drafted by the Giants out of Michigan back in 2008 and slowly became a key difference-maker for a team that eventually won a Super Bowl in 2010. However, during the 2011 season he struggled through injuries that contributed to a steep drop in production from his career-high 60 receptions, 944 yards and nine touchdowns, set the previous season.

The Giants then decided to let Manningham walk and he signed with San Francisco, but more bouts with injuries, including an ACL tear, limited him to just 51 catches, 539 yards and a single TD in 18 games over the last two seasons.

A fan favorite, Manningham, if healthy, could again be a key piece to a Giants receiving corps that this time features Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Jerrell Jernigan. Hakeem Nicks signed with Indianapolis last week.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese has been very active this offseason trying to revamp his club following last season's 7-9 disappointment. So far, he has signed, among others, running back Rashad Jennings, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, cornerback Walter Thurmond, and safety Quintin Demps, and has also worked out deals with several of his own players, including linebacker Jon Beason, running back Peyton Hillis, safety Stevie Brown and corner Trumaine McBride.

On Monday, the Giants reportedly agreed to a five-year, $39 million deal with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
