NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been charged with murder and assault after a stabbing Tuesday morning on the Upper West Side that left his father dead and mother injured, police said.

Police said the attack happened around 5:45 a.m. at 784 Columbus Ave., at West 97th Street.

Officers were responding to a call of an assault inside an eighth floor apartment when they found a 71-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the face and chest, police said.

A 56-year-old woman was also found stabbed in the chest, police said.

The man -- identified as Darlington Powe -- was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where she is in stable condition.

Police captured the couple's 27-year-old son running from the apartment, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported. The son, Anthony Powe, was charged with second-degree murder and assault Tuesday evening.

"Just really sad," neighbor Carrie Jacobs said. "From what I knew of them, they were nice people."

"I had seen him before, but I didn't know him and the parents were lovely people," another neighbor told Diamond. "The father who was killed was just the nicest man."

Police believe a pair of scissors were used in the attack, 1010 WINS Juliet Papa reported.

Sources said he had a history of psychological problems, CBS 2's Don Champion reported.

Police had been called to the apartment for domestic incidents several times in the past, Papa reported.
