Fire Breaks Out In Manhattan Municipal Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A small fire broke out late Friday afternoon in the Manhattan Municipal Building.

As Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2, the all-hands fire broke out around 5 p.m. on the eighth floor of the building, at 1 Centre St. in downtown Manhattan.

Light smoke spread throughout the building, which was evacuated.

Firefighters went up to the eighth floor with a hand line and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Two firefighters were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, the FDNY said. One other person refused medical attention.

But the fire caused major delays during the evening rush on the inbound Brooklyn Bridge, which comes down into Centre Street.

The fire started during an asbestos abatement operation, but the cause was not immediately learned.

The building houses numerous New York City municipal offices, including the Department of Finance, the Public advocate's Office, the Comptroller's Office, and the Landmarks Preservation Commission – as well as the Manhattan Borough President's office.

The fire was out by 6:20 p.m.
