Girl Falls 3 Stories Down Elevator Shaft In SoHo Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A girl was hospitalized in serious condition after she fell several flights down an elevator shaft in a SoHo building Friday afternoon.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the girl fell three flights from the first floor to the sub-basement in the building at 41 Crosby St., according to FDNY Battalion Chief Phil Solimeo.

The girl lives on the top floor of the five-story building, Solimeo said, adding she fell 30 to 35 feet.

Fire crews rushed to the base of the elevator shaft and placed her on a backboard before rushing to the hospital in an ambulance, Solimeo said.

The girl was taken to Bellevue Hospital with multiple injuries, Solimeo said.

Solimeo said the girl was an adolescent, but could not specify her age.

The Department of Buildings elevator unit was on the scene investigating late Friday afternoon.
