BAYONNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A Bayonne High School senior has two dates for prom — one of whom is a New York Giant.
As CBS 2’s Dave Carlin reported, 18-year-old Lauren Delbert asked her football hero, Giants punter and occasional fitness model Steve Weatherford, to go to her June 6 prom in a Twitter post.
“It was a football, and it said, ‘Wanna tackle PROM with me?'” Delbert said. “And I sent that to him, and I put ‘PROM?’ in my tweet.”
Weatherford wrote back: “YES:)”.
CBS 2 was there for the first phone conversation between the two Tuesday. “Thanks for accepting,” Delbert said, giggling.
“I thought it was pretty creative,” Weatherford told Carlin. ” … Yeah, I think it’ll be fun. I talked to her earlier today. I said because I want to make sure my bow tie matches her dress. I want to know what time to be at the house. And I actually rented a red convertible Ferrari to pick her up in.”
Word about Delbert’s famous prom date is now all over the Internet, and it’s also getting her attention in the hallways at school.
“Everyone came up to me like, ‘Oh, you’re the girl!'” Delbert said.
Her parents and boyfriend are being good sports about it.
When asked if he thought the arrangement was unusual, Delbert’s boyfriend, Steve Schumann, wearing a Giants shirt, replied, “Not really.”
“I mean, I’m allowing him to come,” Schumann said. “It’s not a bother to me.”
“I think that people should go for it,” Delbert said. “Because they don’t have anything to lose.”
