Mets Give Struggling Granderson Day Off In Favor Of Abreu
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bobby Abreu is making his first start for the Mets on Thursday afternoon in New York's series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Abreu will bat sixth and play right field in place of struggling slugger Curtis Granderson, who's off to a brutal start after signing a four-year, $60 million contract this offseason.
Granderson snapped an 0-for-22 streak in the first inning of Wednesday night's 3-2 win, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk and raising his average to .125. He also bumped his average at Citi Field to .104.
"I wish I knew (the problem)," Granderson said Tuesday. "Because if I knew I would hopefully be able to figure it out. That's what we're searching for right now, trying to see exactly what it could, what it might be."
Earlier this week, the 40-year-old Abreu appeared in his first major league at-bat since 2012. He was called up on Monday.
He was raking at Triple-A Las Vegas, hitting .395 with one home run, four doubles and nine RBIs in 15 games. But the veteran left-handed batter isn't known for his defense, which could make for an interesting afternoon in blustery Flushing.
The Mets will be looking for their third win against the Cardinals in the four-game set. Bartolo Colon (1-3, 5.40 ERA) will take the bump against St. Louis' Lance Lynn (4-0, 3.42 ERA) in the 1:10 p.m. start.
