Hofstra Professor To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award From Italian-American Group

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- After more than 50 years as a teacher, professor Michael D'innocenzo will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Association of Italian American Educators.

All but two of the 56 years that D'innocenzo has spent as a teacher have been spent at Hofstra University, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

"Studying American history is the greatest emphasis on freedom and opportunity for people no matter their backgrounds," D'innocenzo said of his years as an educator.

D'innocenzo's father was a laborer who only went to school for 3 years, his mother only went to school for 5.

The association also plans to give 'Educator Of The Year' awards to Erica Didonato-Tumscitz who teaches at P.S.-182 in the Bronx, and Anna Maria Maniscalchi who teaches Advanced Placement Italian at New Hyde park Memorial High School.
