Woman Faces Charges After Allegedly Taking 2 Kids From Outside Brooklyn Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Panic rang through Borough Park, Brooklyn Sunday after the disappearance of two 4-year-olds.

A surveillance photo shows a woman, identified by police as Karen Cohen, walking away with the children.

As CBS 2's Emily Smith reported, the grandmother of the boy and girl said her daughter-in-law turned her back for only a minute when the young cousins were snatched.

"She said to them 'your mother said we can take you' and they believed it and they went," she said.

Dashcam video shows the end of the frantic search to find the children. Borough Park's Shomrim Patrol aided police for nearly two hours.

Police said 47-year-old Cohen took the kids from the family's fenced-in backyard on 51st Street.

It remains unclear why or what exactly happened.

According to the 4-year-old kids, they just took a walk and played at a nearby park, Smith reported.

"They were very overwhelmed when the police took them. That was more overwhelming than the whole thing," the grandmother said.

The children appear to be OK, but their grandmother remained a bit overwhelmed.

"You really have to watch your children! If she had the intention to do something, I don't know if we could've stopped them or been there in time," she said.

Cohen was taken to the 66th Precinct. She was arraigned and released, facing two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The children are visiting with their parents from Switzerland and Israel.
