Job Fair For Veterans Held In Howard Beach

HOWARD BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A job fair was held Sunday for military veterans in search of a new job.

The job fair, which began at 9 a.m., was held at Russo's on the Bay in Howard Beach, Queens, CBS 2 reported.

Francisco Tejeda has a few more months in the Army, but he isn't wasting time looking for a job for when he gets out.

"And it's really hard to find a job that matches your set of skills," he said.

Fifty employers and 100 veterans showed up for the job fair, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported.

Councilman Eric Ulrich hosted the event.

He told Miller unemployment is higher among veterans compared to the general population.

"And that's truly unfortunate. That people who fought our wars and put on the uniform and went overseas to protect our country come back to a nation that is not always so helpful," he said.

William Lembo was at the fair looking for a few good plumbers. He's also a veteran.

"Being able to speak to them and help them see the way I see things is the biggest benefit to me being out here," he said.

Also expected to be in attendance was City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
