Man Puts Up Controversial Sign Warning Drivers To Slow Down In Wayne

WAYNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey man put up a controversial sign warning drivers to slow down in his neighborhood.

The sign reads, "If you hit one of these kids because you are speeding you will not need a lawyer." Below the message is an image of a gun.

Craig Rovere put up the sign on Laurel Drive in Wayne after someone ran down a "children at play" sign on the street, News 12 New Jersey reported.

Residents have complained drivers often speed in the area, but some in the neighborhood said Rovere's sign sends the wrong message.

Rovere said he was going for shock value and is not planning on shooting anyone, News 12 reported.

He said it appears his message got through to drivers over the past few days and he has taken the sign down, but said he's prepared to put it back up if necessary, News 12 reported.

Town officials are looking at speed bumps and additional warning signs to slow traffic.
