Police: Body Matches Description Of High School Student Who Waded Into Hudson River

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A body was pulled Tuesday from the Hudson River offshore from Washington Heights, and police said the body matched the description of a Harlem high school student who waded into the river and disappeared last week.

At 9:33 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a 911 call for an unidentified female body that was found at 170th Street and Riverside Drive.

The NYPD Harbor Unit recovered the victim and took her to the 125th Street Pier, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The New York City Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of the woman's death.

Police did not identify the woman Tuesday night. But they did tell 1010 WINS the body matched the description of Omotayo Adeoye, 17, who had been a student at the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College in Harlem.

As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, on Thursday afternoon, the teen began handing her clothes to bystanders, left her identification on a rock, and began wading into the Hudson River.

Adeoye, of the Bronx, was caught using her cell phone during a test at school, CBS 2 reported.

A classmate said the teacher yelled at Adeoye, who then apologized.

Investigators said she then wrote a suicide note and asked to go to the bathroom.

But instead, she walked to the Hudson River's edge at West 165th Street and jumped in, CBS 2 reported.

Witnesses pleaded with the teen to come out of the water. She did not, and eventually disappeared, Stern reported.

The Department of Education is launching an investigation into the incident.

The schools chancellor is promising a new look at student mental health awareness.
