New Website Helps LI Youths Find Summer Jobs

GLENWOOD LANDING, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Looking for a summer job?

Long Island has a new website to help young adults find part time, temporary and odd jobs.

North Shore businessman Thomas Cerna came up with the idea for Youthire.com last summer when he needed someone to water his plants while he and his wife went away on vacation.

"Normally we would hire a girl on our block to water our plants when we went away but last year she was going away with her family the same week as us," Cerna said. "We were left in a predicament as far as having our plants watered and had to leave without having the problem solved. This is when the idea for Youthire.com came about."

The website lets homeowners post everyday odd-jobs, including gardening, cleaning and pet sitting, to local young adults aged 16-26. It's free to register.

"To date we've had mostly outdoor garden maintenance jobs, we've had car washing jobs," Cerna said.

Jeff Norwood, of Glenwood Landing, used the website to hire 17-year-old Brian Sebetic to rip out all the weeds covering his patio for $10 an hour.

"It's wonderful hiring kids from the neighborhood," Norwood told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.

"We can find jobs that wouldn't really exist before," Sebetic said. "It's good for homeowners, too. I know Jeff he wouldn't really want to do this by himself."
