Police: Boy, 3, Found In Newark After Grandfather Loses Him On Subway In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 3-year-old boy was found safe in Newark Friday evening, hours after vanishing when his grandfather got on a subway train in Brooklyn with him and fell asleep, police said.
Kah-yon Reynolds was found in good health in Newark, police said around 10:30 p.m. His disappearance more than five hours earlier set off a frantic search, CBS 2's Matt Kozar reported.
Kah-yon had gotten onto a Manhattan-bound F Train at the Smith-9th Street station in Gowanus, Brooklyn with his grandfather and another adult sometime Friday afternoon, police said.
Police sources told CBS 2 that the grandfather, who they said takes methadone, usually picks up the boy at his Newark home to take him for a walk. But this time, the grandfather took the boy to Brooklyn with someone police called a "methadone clinic" friend, and the grandfather fell asleep on the subway, police said.
Kah-yon spent the day with the grandfather's friend and returned to Newark, police said.
Meanwhile, the grandfather was fast asleep on the train and ended up going through Brooklyn and Manhattan and all the way to the end of the line Queens, police said. When he woke up, he didn't know where Kah-yon was, police said.
Kah-yon was reported missing around 5:30 p.m., police said.
The NYPD called the methadone clinic and tracked down the grandfather's friend via cellphone, finding out that the friend and the child were on their way to Newark, police said.
The grandfather was facing possible charges Friday night, police said. The boy was with Newark police late Friday.
