Ripley's Believe It Not Trots Out Unorthodox Flavors For National Ice Cream Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Oscar the Grouch of "Sesame Street" fame likes his ice cream with pickles and sardines on it, and in Times Square on Sunday, you could have come pretty close to such flavors.
Sunday was National Ice Cream Day, and in honor of the occasion, the people at Ripley's Believe It Or Not, at Ripley's Believe It or Not, at 234 W. 42nd St. in Times Square, offered people some offbeat and perhaps not-so-appetizing flavors.
Among the flavors were falafel, herring, and mustard with hot dogs. The ice cream was free, but people were forced to spin a wheel for their toppings and some were not too thrilled.
Meanwhile, 1010 WINS asked some customers outside Ben and Jerry's, at 200 W. 44th St. a couple of blocks away, about their favorite flavors. Falafel and herring were not on anyone's list.
"Chocolate – because it's the perfect food," one man said.
"My favorite flavor is cookies and cream, because I like cookies and ice cream," a youngster said.
And many Ben and Jerry's customers thought National Ice Cream Day was a great idea.
"I think that's a really good day. It's like one of the happiest days in my life," a woman said.
"When I was pregnant with my kids, I ate so much Ben and Jerry's that they should have named the children Ben or Jerry," another woman said.
The unofficial holiday dates back to 1984, when President Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday in July National Ice Cream Day.
