Staten Island Yankees Take Aim At Fake Mustache World Record

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Staten Island Yankees are taking another hack at the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Yankees' Single-A affiliate says it will try -- one more time -- to break the record for "the most fake mustaches worn in one place at one time."

The team, with an assist from the Gotham City Beard Alliance, will make its latest attempt on August 2 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Yanks said their first try was rained out and ultimately unsuccessful.

"As someone who has proudly worn many styles of mustaches over the years, starting with a really bad one at about 14 years old, I join all Staten Island Yankee fans in saluting all 'staches, real and those fake ones designed to break records," Staten Island Yankees CEO Steve Violetta said in a statement.

All fans in attendance for the game against the Auburn Doubledays will receive a fake mustache to wear during the world-record attempt in the third inning.

Comedian Jennifer Remauro and Gotham City Beard Alliance president Simon Cleveland, who encouraged "every Staten Islander, be they man, woman or child, to grow their mustaches to their fullest," will also be on hand.

The record for people wearing fake lipwear is 2,268, set during an 2013 bicycling event in Iowa, the team said.
