Staten Island Vigil Honors NYPD Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- More than 100 supporters were on hand on Thursday for a vigil to honor NYPD officers killed in the line of duty outside of a stationhouse in New Dorp.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported the 'Community Vigil for our Fallen Police Officers' was a chance for residents to show their appreciation for the police.

"I think we take advantage of the police officers. We think they're machines, we think they're robots. They're our family and our friends. They're just like us," event organizer Scott LoBaido said.

There have been and there will be demonstrations on Staten Island against police brutality, 1010 WINS' Baumgarten reported.

Thursday night's vigil was not attempt to put down demonstrations against the police, it was simply a way to say thank you to the men and women who risk their lives on a daily basis, LoBaido explained.

For Albert, being at the vigil was a way to give some credit to New York's Finest.

"Every cop that goes out in the morning has a target on his thing, and a lot of people never make it home. Nobody gives them the credit," he said.

According to a published report, LoBaido had planned to hold this vigil even before the news of Garner's death broke in July.
