Experts: Changing Seasons, Labor Day Sales Create Perfect Shopping Scenario

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Labor Day weekend is another reminder that school is right around the corner, and parents are searching for deals.

As CBS 2's Don Champion reported, you might be surprised by what you can find.

"Especially now, a lot of people don't wait this long to go shopping so the closer to school you have to dig for sizes, but you find good deals,' Jennifer Fortes said.

Shopping expert Mark LoCastro suggested that consumers think laptops and clothing. This time of year is second only to Black Friday for finding good deals on laptops.

When it comes to clothing he said that the combination of Labor Day sales and the changing of seasons creates a perfect scenario for shoppers.

"Retailers want to clear their inventory and make way for fall lines," he said.

That can mean sales of up to 60 to 70 percent off of summer clothing and shoes, LoCastro said.

This year alone the National Retail Federation expects back to school shopping to top the $26.5-billion mark.

Experts are offering even bigger sales this year because recent studies have shown that shoppers are willing to spend more.

"When retailers compete it's better for the consumer and that's what we're seeing here. They just want to kinda get the word out early about back to school sales and get consumers spending," LoCastro said.

Experts say shoppers can also find good deals online right now.

If you are in the market for a grill or lawn furniture, experts say now is a great time to find deals on those items.
