NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York City is the most bike-friendly city in the entire country, according to Bicycling Magazine.
The magazine pointed to the city’s installation of bike lanes and the success of the Citi Bike program as factors in its decision to bump the Big Apple to the top of its biennial rankings of the 50 best cycling cities in the United States.
“And it has a commitment to keep making progress. And we thought for all of these reasons, New York has just shown the way for urban areas to go forward,” said Bicycling Magazine editor Bill Strickland.
Strickland told 1010 WINS ranking high in the magazine’s list is a sign of a healthy city.
“Bicycles are an indicator — more and more studies are showing this, and we’re seeing this — that it’s an indicator of an urban area’s vibrancy and the robustness of its economy and the safety of its streets. And New York is really leading the way,” he said.
Rounding out the top 10 are Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, Washington D.C., Boulder, San Francisco, Seattle, Ft. Collins, and Cambridge.
Suffolk County on Long Island was ranked worst for cyclists. The magazine said the county consistently ranks among the most dangerous places in the entire country to ride a bike.
“In 2008, the county (population 1.5 million) accounted for 23.8 percent of all cyclist fatalities in the state of New York (population 19.5 million),” Bicycling Magazine said.
New York City was listed seventh the last time Bicycling Magazine released its rankings.
