First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro To Retire After Over 40 Years Of Service

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD announced that First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro is retiring after more than 40 years on the force.

Pineiro, the department's highest ranking Hispanic, joined the NYPD in 1970.

Pineiro had been a top candidate for police commissioner before Mayor Bill de Blasio selected Bill Bratton.

As 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported, Bratton denies there is any bad blood between him and Pineiro.

Bratton said he's making all kinds of personnel moves.

"I'll be announcing an additional five or six promotions and a couple of deputy commissioners to my command staff as part of that movement," the commissioner said.

But sources told Papa that Pineiro was left out of the loop and is now retiring at the end of October.

Bratton said it was an unfortunate coincidence that Pineiro's retirement comes during the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Papa reported.
