Island Harvest Reaches Out For Donations Ahead Of Holiday Season

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- September is Hunger Action Month and with the holiday season right around the corner Island Harvest is reaching out to the public for help.

Long Island's largest hunger-relief organization is forecasting an increase in demand for supplemental food during the holidays. It is asking for food and financial donations to not only meet those demands, but also restock their shelves with supplies for everyday needs.

"Right now I'm looking at empty shelves," Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO at Island Harvest, told 1010 WINS. "We're having a tough time filling our shelves and meeting the demand in the community."

Shubin Dresner said more than 300,000 people on Long Island are struggling to make ends meet.

"That amounts to about one in every 10 Long Islander seeking help from emergency food programs and food pantries across Long Island," Shubin Dresner said.

More than one-third of those people are children."You can fill Citi Field twice with the number of children that we're helping each year and there would still be a line out there door," Shubin Dresner said. "Children should not know about hunger."
