Residents: New Expressway Exit Ramp Is Causing Chaos On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new exit ramp on Staten Island may be causing confusion and danger.

Salvator Intoci told CBS 2's Dave Carlin that his care is mangled, a total loss.

His Chevy Aveo was parked on Milford Drive, but was pushed into a telephone pole.

The driver was exiting the Staten Island Expressway via the newly opened Exit 13, and slammed into Intoci's car before taking off on foot.

Intoci blamed the driver and the State Department of Transportation.

Since Intoci's car was mangled on August 29, he has counted 5 more crashes with different drivers on or near the exact same spot.

"It's six different accidents. People are flying off the exit," he said.

When the exit opened in mid-August there were no street markings, leaving drivers confused. The Expressway, Ocean Terrace, and Witteman Place all funnel onto Milford Drive.

From Witteman car after car, even school safety agents, ignored the stop sign in a hurry to merge.

Neighbors say because the stop signs simply are not working they want traffic lights.

"The traffic light and also a camera," Davelle Reinke said, "They take a picture of the car and they get tickets. They will stop; it will stop then."

A State Department of Transportation source told CBS 2 that there will be an investigation. Neighbors have demanded that it result in a slow-down or even a shutdown, before the congested chaos causes death.
