'Boomer & Carton' Co-Host Made Comments When Singing Praises Of Wayne Chrebet

NEW YORK (WFAN) — On Monday night during the Jets’ game against the Bears, it was announced that wide receiver Wayne Chrebet will be inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor during halftime on December 1 when the Jets host the Dolphins at MetLife Stadium.

On Tuesday morning, WFAN co-host Boomer Esiason — who played with the fan favorite in New York in 1995 — spoke very highly of Chrebet upon hearing the news that the Hofstra product will be honored by the organization.

Boomer also took a shot at Keyshawn Johnson — who played for the Jets from 1996-1999 — in the process.

“I just hated the fact that Keyshawn Johnson called him the mascot of the Jets,” Boomer said. “Totally disrespectful. If you put Keyshawn Johnson and Wayne Chrebet in a room together and you looked at the guys, you’d say, ‘OK, who’s gonna be the better player?’ You would say that Keyshawn Johnson would be because he’s more gifted and everything else.

“But I’ll tell you what. You take Wayne Chrebet’s heart out of him and put it into Keyshawn Johnson, you got Jerry Rice. That’s basically what you have.”

Johnson was not pleased with Esiason’s comments. The former Pro Bowler fired back with a series of tweets on Tuesday afternoon.

Chrebet played with Gang Green until 2005 and finished second in franchise history with 580 receptions. He also ranks fifth in team history with 7,365 yards from scrimmage. The Garfield, N.J. native’s 580 catches are the third-most by a player who wasn’t drafted. He finished his career with 41 touchdowns.
