Nurse Accused Of Smuggling Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs Into Rikers Island
NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities have arrested a New York City jail nurse accused of smuggling alcohol, tobacco and prescription anti-addiction drugs into Rikers Island's largest facility in exchange for payments from inmates.
Department of Investigation officials announced the charges against Jeffrey Taylor Wednesday. He was arraigned on bribery, conspiracy and contraband charges late Tuesday.
An attorney for the 48-year-old registered nurse didn't immediately return a message.
A spokeswoman for Brentwood, Tennessee-based Corizon Health Inc., the company contracted for Rikers' health care, didn't immediately comment.
Prosecutors say Taylor was paid about $2,200 via Western Union to bring vodka, Suboxone and tobacco to inmate janitors.
The DOI says it did a jail sweep on Rikers last week. Recent DOI probes have resulted in more than 30 inmate and 11 jail staff arrests.
