Bayonne Bridge To Temporarily Close This Weekend

BAYONNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Motorists who use the Bayonne Bridge will need to find an alternate route.

The bridge will be closed this weekend while construction crews remove portions of the structure and lift large steel and concrete sections.

The bridge will close from 9 p.m. Friday until 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The Port Authority's free weekend shuttle service will be suspended on Saturday. It will operate on Friday and Sunday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Motorists should consider using the Goethals Bridge.

The closure is part of a $1.3 billion project to raise the roadway to give larger ships access to New York and New Jersey ports. The new bridge roadway will have wider lanes and a median.

The bridge was also closed the weekend of Sept. 13 as renovations were made.

The span connects Bayonne with Staten Island, New York.
