Police: Mother, 3 Children Struck In Linden, New Jersey

LINDEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A mother and her three children were struck by a car while crossing the street in Linden Friday morning, police said.

The incident took place at around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Dewitt Terrace and Academy Terrace.

As the mother -- Jordan Spencer, 34 -- was crossing the street, a car heading south on Dewitt Terrace stopped for her and her children to pass. A second car, a silver 2011 Honda Civic, went around the car and struck the group, police said.

None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

"The mom is very serious to critical. The baby is also in some tough shape, was thrown from the stroller," said Lt. Michael Babulski of the Linden Police.

"A little baby with the mother was on the ground over there," resident Roberto Orjula told CBS 2's Christine Sloan.

"The driver was curious why they stopped, so he went around to pass, and he didn't see the mother with the children," Babulski said.

Some residents also told Sloan the sun glare causes problems in the area.

"It's very bad, you can't see where you're going," said Eleanor Demarzo.

"6:30 to 9, 9:30, they go faster, always with the cellular," Orjula said. "Always speeding with the phone."

The driver of the Civic, a 54-year-old man from Linden, was taken to Linden Police headquarters and was cooperating with the investigation, police said. No charges had been filed as of Friday night.

The injured were taken to University Hospital in Newark.

Spencer and her infant son were left with the most serious injuries to the head and neck, police said. Two other children, ages 2 and 4, were treated for minor injuries.

Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the Linden Police Traffic Bureau at (908) 474-8505.
