NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Police are continuing to investigate two, separate police-involved shootings that happened within two hours of each other on Monday.

Around 7:15 p.m. police rushed to an apartment on Ocean Parkway in Kensington, Brooklyn on a report of a man assaulting a woman with a knife, authorities said.

When officers arrived, they found a 47-year-old man armed with a knife and a 51-year-old man inside the apartment, police said.

A woman and two children, ages six and seven, had also locked themselves in a bathroom as the suspect tried to get inside, police said. They said one of the men was the woman’s current boyfriend, the other was her ex.

Police said the second man confronted the knife-wielding suspect, who was then shot by police after he refused orders to drop the knife. The 47-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 51-year-old man was taken to the hospital where he also died.

Police said a 35-year-old woman and two children were not harmed and said two knives were recovered at the scene.

Neighbors were distraught over the incident.

“We’ve had little things like accidents with the cars, but never any domestic violence that ended up this way,” said neighbor Arlene Valentin. “It’s just scary.”

“We don’t know what people have in their homes, it’s closed doors,” said neighbor Helena Auslenderr. “But we’ve never had murders, stabbing a or anything like that.”

It was the second police-involved shooting in less than two hours.

Around 5:45 p.m. Monday, police said two officers on foot saw a man shooting a handgun on East 145th Street and College Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

They said the 19-year-old suspect started running toward them, then pointed his gun at one cop. Police fired back, shooting the suspect in the elbow.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.
