Abused Pit Bull Puppy, Miss Harper, Gets New Home On Long Island

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An abused pit bull puppy has found a loving new home on Long Island.

Miss Harper was found last September with her back leg and both her ears cut off. Three people were arrested and charged with animal cruelty in connection with the case.

After receiving care at My Pets Vet in Huntington, Miss Harper was put up for adoption and thousands of people from around the world applied.

As 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported, Donna Kramer of My Pets Vet said the office tried to get Miss Harper a prosthetic leg.

"But with her rambunctious personality, that didn't work," Kramer said.

The wounds have healed, and Miss Harper is able to get around on three legs.

Now, Miss Harper has gone home with the Roberts family from Bellmore.

"We applied and we were fortunate enough to get the phone call, " said Miss Harper's new owner, Stephen Roberts. "She was introduced to our other dog, we have a 3-year-old pit bull. She stayed with us for a few days and everything worked out and then she ended up staying."

Those accused of abusing Miss Harper have a court date next month.

"I would like to see them be put in jail, which they deserve," Roberts said. "If you could do that to an animal, you've gotta be heartless."

Miss Harper inspired lawmakers to establish an animal abuse registry in Nassau County. People on the registry are not allowed to adopt or buy an animal.

"Miss Harper's life had a horrific start and it is wonderful that it now has a happy ending," stated Bob Sowers, president of the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Miss Harper's mother, Missy, was rescued in April. Officials said she was being used to breed puppies that were then brutally abused.

Missy is still in need of a loving home, preferably with no other pets.

"She's had a traumatic enough life up to this point. She needs a lot of attention," Sowers said.

The SPCA called Missy a very sweet, resilient and affectionate girl who will be happy as the only dog in a home. Officials said all she wants is a loving owner and some attention.

Those interested in adopting Missy are asked to email the Nassau County SPCA at adopt@ncspca.us.
