FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation is underway into a crash involving the head of the Fairfield Police Department.

Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara was waiting for the light to change at Reef and Post roads around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when his unmarked police cruiser was struck from behind by a BMW SUV, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.

Lt. James Perez said the driver of the SUV didn't brake.

"She ran right into him," Perez said.

"It's self-evident from the damage on his vehicle that she was traveling at an extremely high speed," Perez added. "The rear of the car, the way it was struck, it literally folded like an accordion, but yet the passenger side of the vehicle was largely left intact."

There was no indication of alcohol or drugs, but Perez said police suspect there might be a medical condition involved.

Police are also considering distracted driving as a possible cause.

"The one thing that the driver kept saying is, 'I made a mistake, I made a mistake,' but she wouldn't elaborate or explain what that mistake was," Perez said. "We're thinking that it could possibly have been texting or distracted driving."

MacNamara was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital; the SUV driver and her 7-month-old child were taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

None of the injuries are considered life threatening.

MacNamara was less than two blocks from police headquarters at the time of the crash.
