Police: Suspect Conned Woman Out Of Nearly $2,200 Through Apartment Ad

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Tuesday were searching for a suspect who allegedly conned a woman out of nearly $2,200 when she answered an ad for an apartment he claimed he had for rent.

The 39-year-old woman answered a Craigslist ad for an apartment for rent in Manhattan, police said. When the woman called the suspect, he said he was in Missouri, and he needed to know the woman had the money for a deposit because he has been "inconvenienced" before, police said.

The woman deposited $2,199 in a Western Union account and gave the suspect the name and confirmation it was under, police said.

On Sept. 2, the suspect went to the Action Check Cashing store in Queens and used a fake ID with the name the woman deposited the money under to take the cash, police said.

Police have released a surveillance video of the suspect from the check cashing store.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
