Family Poverty On The Rise In Babylon

BABYLON (CBSNewYork) -- About one in 13 families in Babylon, Long Island, are living in poverty, U.S. Census Bureau estimates show.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the poverty rate in the town, which also features multimillion-dollar homes along the waterfront, jumped from 2 percent in 2010 to 8 percent in 2013. Babylon was the only town to experience a statistically significant rise in poverty during that span.

Town Supervisor Richard Shaffer told Hall part of the problem is that many people were displaced by Superstorm Sandy, causing hardship.

He said there is help available.

"We have advocates who work with families, and we will try to identify what programs are potentially out there and available to them," Shaffer said.

The federal poverty level for a family of four last year was a household income of less than $23,834.
