MOONACHIE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A big mess in Moonachie nearly turned into a disaster on Friday night.
A water main break flooded streets, cut off service to businesses, and nearly ruined wedding plans for two couples.
CBS2’s Tracee Carrasco was on the scene where, 12 hours later, crews were still trying to fix the problem, and water was still coming out of the ground.
When Heidi and James Beer arrived at The Graycliff on Friday night, they had no idea that their wedding was in jeopardy of not even happening.
“The owner told us not to worry about it. He said everything would be taken care of and he said we’ll go as scheduled,” James said.
Hours earlier, around noon, just outside of the banquet hall contractors accidentally hit a water main. Cell phone video showed water gushing from the break and gushing nearly 15 feet into the air.
In order to fix the break United Water shut down service to 20 commercial businesses in the area, including The Graycliff.
“I heard about it. My father told me, but I stayed away from watching the news,” Heidi said.
While crews worked all day to stop the water, the Graycliff staff scrambled to come up with a plan for the two weddings scheduled. They brought in portable bathrooms and a water tank, but still had to get water for the emergency fire sprinklers in order for the weddings to take place.
“These people, they plan a wedding for a long time and you have to give them a wedding under any circumstances that happen,” Graycliff owner Tony Papamarkos said.
Word that the wedding would go on as planned, drew a thumbs up from the groom, as he and his bride went on to enjoy their happily ever after.
