NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Brownsville, Brooklyn early Saturday morning and then took off.

As 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported, it was 2:20 a.m. when the victim tried to cross Rockaway Parkway mid-block between Winthrop Street and Clarkson Avenue and was hit by a dark-colored sedan, which then took off.

The 59-year-old victim was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, CBS2's Ilana Gold reported.

Residents in the area said Rockaway Parkway can be a hazardous street to cross, especially at that hour.

"I would cross on the side. To cross in the middle is very dangerous over here because these cars come down here very fast," said one man.

There's no word yet whether speed played a role in the accident. Police continue to investigate.
