Disgruntled Jets Fans Raise Enough Cash For 'Fire John Idzik' Billboard
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Four fed-up fans had no problem meeting their goal.
The same can't be said about the team they root for.
The co-founders of the website FireJohnIdzik.com say they have already raised enough money to bring their message -- imploring New York Jets owner Woody Johnson to dump his general manager -- to a billboard near MetLife Stadium.
Jason Koeppel of Hackensack, N.J., who launched the site last week with three of his friends, told Metro New York that the details "will be announced in the coming days."
"We cannot disclose the location yet but we will say that we give our Joe Namath guarantee that it will be very visible," Koeppel told Metro.
It was a rough week for the general manager. After leaving millions in cap space on the table, Idzik didn't win over many fans during Monday's awkward midseason press conference. Then came the website. On Sunday, the Jets lost their eighth straight game, falling to 1-8 on the season in Kansas City.
Koeppel said his site, with a stated goal of raising $10,000 for a billboard near the Jets' home stadium, must have struck a nerve with fans.
"I wish I could give a more complete answer but we did not expect or plan for this sort of support so fast," he said. "It speaks to the level of anger that Jets fans are feeling right now and we are happy that we have provided a way for them to express it."
In a statement, FireJohnIdzik.com said its billboard "will be up from late November until the beginning of 2015."
"To further spread our message, supporters of our cause will be outfitted in 'Fire John Idzik' T-shirts across the country and inside of the stadium," the website said, according to Metro. "Let this be a clear message to owner Woody Johnson that Jets fans will no longer tolerate incompetence from our leaders."
