NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has introduced a plan to transform certain crime-plagued neighborhoods into model communities of prosperity.

It’s called the Model Neighborhood Plan, and it aims to clean up targeted areas in the city, reduce crime and increase the quality of life for residents, 1010 WINS’ Rebecca Granet reported.

“We’re going to provide the levels of services that we’ve been providing. We’re just going to focus our energy in specific areas,” Baraka explained.

The plan focuses on Clinton Hill in Newark’s South Ward and the Lower West Ward.

Among other efforts, the initiative leverages the city’s resources and departments to increase police patrols, repair or construct homes, and add community gardens to the neighborhoods, Granet reported.

“We focus our energy in one area and we get maximum impact in that area,” Baraka added.

Incentives to attract home buyers to the neighborhoods will also be offered.

The mayor said the city will be checking in with residents to measure the impact of the initiative and will reassess after six months.
