Mother Hit By Stray Bullet While Picking Up Her Child At Brighton Beach School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A mother was shot Wednesday while picking up her child from school in Brooklyn.

The shooting happened on Brighton 6th Street in Brighton Beach, police said.

Two groups got into a fight and someone fired a gun, police said. A stray bullet hit the 34-year-old woman -- identified as Safia Bibi -- in the right arm as she walked to nearby P.S. 253.

The woman was taken to Lutheran Medical Center. Meanwhile, students remained inside the school until police secured the area.

Speaking to CBS2 after she was released from the hospital, Bibi said groups of kids from nearby Grady High School often get into fights on her street.

She said she tries to avoid them, but this time, she said someone pulled out a gun to shoot another person and she was caught in the middle.

Bibi's niece translated for her as she spoke.

"She just says she's really afraid of them, and every day it happens, and every time she picks up the kids, she's always afraid, and it's just crazy," her niece said.

CBS2 has learned that following the incident, more school safety agents will be at the high school to monitor the students.

The NYPD was still looking for the gunman late Wednesday.
