HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork)Bergen County Executive-elect Jim Tedesco says one of his first orders of business will be merging the county Police Department and Sheriff’s Office.

Tedesco, a county freeholder and former mayor of Paramus, told WCBS 880’s Levon Putney he hopes to sign a memorandum of agreement realigning the two police forces within his first 100 days in office.

Tedesco said the move will save Bergen hundreds of millions of dollars over 20 to 25 years and eliminate the replication of certain services and positions.

He said, however, that no one will be laid off.

Tedesco will be sworn in Jan. 1.
