Police: Woman Killed In DWI Crash On Long Island

MELVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A young Long Island woman is dead following an alcohol-fueled crash early Sunday morning on the Long Island Expressway, Suffolk County Police said.

According to authorities, 25-year-old Ismelda Rodriguez, of Brentwood, was a passenger in a car driven by 27-year-old Daniel Moreira when it struck the back of another vehicle near Exit 49 in Melville at around 3:45 a.m.

Moreira, of Deer Park, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle, 60-year-old Terry Doughan, wasn't injured.

Moreira was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Police said both vehicles were impounded for safety checks as the investigation into the crash continues.

Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555. All calls will be kept confidential.
