Brooklyn Native Carol Ann Susi, Mrs. Wolowitz On 'The Big Bang Theory,' Dies At 62
LOS ANGELES (CBSNewYork) -- Brooklyn native Carol Ann Susi, who voiced the role of the unseen Mrs. Wolowitz on CBS' "The Big Bang Theory", has died.
She was 62.
Throughout the show's eight seasons, Susi was unseen by viewers as she portrayed the loud and cantankerous mother of Simon Helberg's Howard Wolowitz character.
She reportedly died following a brief battle with cancer, CBS Los Angeles reported.
On Tuesday, Warner Bros, Television, CBS, and "The Big Bang Theory" executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro and Bill Brady said the following in a collaborative statement:
"The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz. Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show's eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann's immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance. In addition to her talent, Carol Ann was a constant source of joy and kindness to all. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her family during this time, and we will miss her greatly."
Susi made appearances on numerous other TV shows, including "Becker," "Just Shoot Me," "Married… with Children," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," and "Seinfeld."
In the "Seinfeld" episode "The Boyfriend" that also featured Keith Hernandez, Susi played the daughter of an unemployment officer who was assigned to Jason Alexander's George Costanza character. George goes on a date with Susi's character that does not go well at all.
Her first appearance was in the 1970s on "Kolchak: The Night Stalker."
