Ortega, of Little Egg Harbor, is facing a number of charges and is accused of swerving on Route 9 and hitting Moeller, who was walking on the shoulder.

"Amazingly, with total disregard for life, Ortega continued operating the vehicle for about one and a half miles," Ocean County Prosecutor Al Della Fave told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.

The officer who stopped 33-year-old Ortega reported it was obvious to him that he was impaired.

Della Fave said police drew blood samples to see if Ortega was under the influence and are awaiting results.
