Police: Trucks Used In Smash And Grab Attempts Of ATMs In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Newark are trying to find the suspects who they said crashed trucks into two businesses early Friday morning to try to steal ATMs.

The first happened around 2:30 a.m. when police said a truck crashed into Any Garment Cleaners off McCarter Highway.

The entire incident was caught on surveillance video. In it, the truck is seen backing into the store, smashing the front glass. Then a man in a black hoodie is seen going right for the ATM.

The man tries ripping the machine apart, but has no luck. That's when his accomplice tries using the truck to force it open.

"They spent a solid 10 minutes here," store owner Carrie Renz told CBS2's Ilana Gold. "They were using crowbars."

But police said the cash machine got stuck underneath the truck, so the crooks took off in another car parked outside and left with no money. The ATM and the truck were left behind.

"I guess desperation. I don't know, It's insanity -- it's crazy that somebody would do this," Renzi told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

Renzi says she will not be getting another ATM because she does not want to be target again.

"I think about the time they had to do that, which a cop should have been here by then," Rev. John Jackson told WCBS 880's Jim Smith.

Just 10 minutes away from the dry cleaning store, police said a truck smashed into an Applebee's restaurant on Springfield Avenue around 5 a.m.

Police said the truck rammed through the front door and someone tried ripping off the ATM, but at this point, it's unclear if any cash was taken, Gold reported.

The front of the restaurant also had major damage.

The two incidents Friday came after police said a stolen pickup crashed into a convenience store in downtown Newark last week to steal a cash machine.

Surveillance footage shows the truck slam into the front of the Park Place store as glass flies everywhere. The truck backed into the store four times before two men ran inside and grabbed the ATM.

It's unclear if all three incidents were related.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867).
