Paper Bag Speed Dating: Taking Blind Dates To Another Level

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new style of matchmaking has put some mystery back into finding the perfect mate.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, paper bag speed dating is the polar opposite of love at first sight. It is, in fact, a blind date in the most literal sense.

And while it is a little awkward, "Paper Bag Speed Dating" is the newest way New York City singles are looking for love.

"I thought it would be a cool way to meet some new people," one participant said.

"It's hard to find and meet people organically anymore," said another, Monica Siu.

By covering up their faces, organizers hope these potential matches can focus on the person rather than what they look like.

"We usually go looks first and then personality, so this is kind of cool to mix it up," said participant Adam Franscisco.

"I think there's so much more to people than just what you see, judging a book by its cover," said participant Sandy Yu.

The singles go on several two-minute speed dates, and after that, they will decide if they made any connections.

"I had a good time and I enjoyed talking to every single one of the girls," a participant said.

And after the big reveal, some may not have hit it off. But they said it was worth it.

"They came here, they put their heart out there, and if you don't find love, you might as well make a friend," said participant Ignacyo Matynia.

The Paper Bag Speed Dating event was set up to promote an app, Loveflutter, which showcases verbal descriptions of potential dates rather than pictures.
