NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 14-year-old boy died late Thursday, after being struck in a hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn.

The accident happened at 5:05 p.m. at East 7th Street and Caton Avenue in Brooklyn, on the cusp of Kensington and Windsor Terrance, the FDNY EMS told 1010 WINS. Earlier reports that the victim was a girl turned out to be incorrect.

Police said a Chevrolet Impala was headed west on Caton Avenue and its driver made a left turn onto East 7th Street, where it struck the boy as he crossed the street.

The boy — identified as Mohammad Uddin — was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, and was in cardiac arrest at the time, EMS said.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

The driver fled the scene after the accident, but was apprehended later Thursday evening on Ocean Parkway, police said.

Charges against the driver were pending late Thursday, and the investigation was ongoing.
