New York City To Reshape, Improve Workforce Training

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - New York City is reshaping its $500 million workforce development program to help residents get better-paying jobs.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that the program previously produced mostly minimum wage jobs that were rarely in burgeoning industries like technology.

He said his administration would plan to train 30,000 people to take so-called "middle skill" jobs.

De Blasio, who made the announcement at a Bronx college, said the change was part of his plan to fight the city's income equality gap.

Contractors will be required to consider city workers when making hires.

De Blasio said there might be penalties for not hiring city residents but those measures have yet to be determined.

The training changes were a recommendation from a jobs task force de Blasio convened this spring.
