Tips On Keeping Your Information Safe This Cyber Monday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- After Black Friday comes Cyber Monday, and if you are planning to use your credit card, here are some tips that could help protect you while you do some holiday shopping from the comfort of your home.

Thanks to an Internet that is always open for business, Cyber Monday is a little easier on shoppers than Black Friday, but that doesn't mean it's a breeze, CBS2's Diane Macedo reported.

"There's so much noise around Cyber Monday and of course we're sitting at home, but we have access to millions of websites," said Trae Bodge, with Retailmenot.com. "My advice would be find a couple of trusted resources, go from there."

Bodge recommends researching sales first. Be sure to look for coupon codes for even deeper discounts and special sales may also be found in retailers' Twitter and Facebook feeds.

So what are some of the best products to snag Cyber Monday deals on?

"Lots of apparel providers and also consumer electronics and then health and beauty," Bodge said. "Those are the three categories that I think that we'll see the deepest discounts on Cyber Monday."

More than 131 million online shoppers were expected last Cyber Monday -- a big day for retailers and consumers, and for scammers too.

"They know it's Cyber Monday. They know that people are out there shopping and they're gonna do what they can to try and lure you in," said Michael Kaiser, with National Cyber Security Alliance.

Recent breaches at major retailers have put data security in the spotlight for retailers.

Kaiser said consumers must be proactive and take precautions.

"If they take those common sense measures -- they update their software, they put in things like two-step verification or multi-factor authentication. Those are things that are in their control," he said.

Shoppers on mobile devices should also consider using cellular data instead of public Wi-Fi for a more secure Internet connection.
