MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Nassau County Police Department says about 10 percent of its police force is expected to retire next year.

The agency says about 250 officers are expected to leave. It currently has 2,257 members.

Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter told Newsday that 55 to 65 percent of the police force is eligible to retire.

The department will keep up with the turnover by ramping up hiring.

Officers are eligible to retire after 20 years.

James Carver, president of the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, said the loss of so many senior officers will create a void in the department.

"What it means to the public is you're losing veteran police officers that are going to walk out the door with years and years of experience," he told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.
