Child Dead, Pregnant Mom Hurt After Being Hit By Vehicle In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A girl was killed and her pregnant mother was injured Tuesday night when they were struck by a vehicle night in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

As CBS2's Jessica Schneider reported, officials said the incident happened around 9:15 p.m. The 33-year-old pregnant woman and her 10-year-old daughter were struck at 18th Avenue and 60th Street in Brooklyn by a Honda minivan headed north on 60th Street, officials said.

The pregnant woman was pinned under the van, and was taken to Lutheran Medical Center where she was reported in serious, but stable, condition, officials said.

The girl was taken to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition, and was pronounced dead at the hospital soon afterward, authorities said.

The status of the unborn baby was not immediately learned.

People at the scene were shocked by what they saw.

"When I rounded the corner I saw the lady on the ground, the kid by her and she was holding her stomach," said witness Angel Santos. "A guy was pacing -- the guy from the car pacing. He wasn't saying anything. He was just like, mad worried; he was just in total shock."

The woman was seen screaming at the scene, Santos said.

"She was worrying about her kid," he said "She was saying, 'Is my kid OK? Is my kid OK?'"

The driver of the minivan remained at the scene. It was not immediately learned whether there would be any charges.

Late Tuesday, 60th Street remained closed off. Police were on scene and were collecting surveillance video from a nearby 99 cent store.

A shoe was also seen on the street, and was believed to have belonged to one of the victims.
