NYC Agency Drops Proposal To Trim Landmarks List

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission has withdrawn a proposal to remove some 100 historic structures from its list of potential landmarks.

Commission Chairwoman Meenakshi Srinivasan last month proposed trimming 94 individual properties and two historic districts from its oversight to help the agency clear its backlog and focus on new priorities.

The New York Times reports that the proposal was dropped amid opposition from local politicians and advocacy groups.

Srinivasan said she wanted to provide more time for people to speak up for certain properties while making clear all would be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Preservationist Simeon Bankoff said the proposal stalled the landmark status hopes for the Bergdorf Goodman building and Union Square Park and others, including lesser-known properties like one on Oliver Street in Lower Manhattan.

The famous Queens Pepsi Cola sign was also poised to be scratched from the master list for possible designation.
