Man Arrested In Carjacking Death Of L.I. Man Helping Poor

NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Police say a New York City man has been arrested for fatally striking another man with his own vehicle as he attempted to stop a carjacking.

Suffolk County police say Saturday Edwin Gutierrez faces a murder charge and other crimes in the Nov. 28 death of 69-year-old Dionel Ramirez.

Police say Ramirez parked his car at a 7-Eleven, leaving it running while picking up food he was to deliver to a soup kitchen.

That's when they say Gutierrez climbed into the car and started to drive away.

Police say Ramirez tried to stop the 48-year-old Manhattan man but was run over. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

"It's just crazy what happened," Ramirez's daughter told 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius. "I thought it was just going to be another normal day, especially after Thanksgiving."

"He came from a county that was poor, he wants to give back to the people that are less fortunate," his daughter said.

Gutierrez is to be arraigned Sunday. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Police working with a fugitive task force apprehended Gutierrez.
