New York Jets Opponent Profile: Tennessee Titans

By Tyson Rauch

On Sunday the New York Jets (2-11) head out to Tennessee to take on the Titans (2-11) at LP Field. The Titans have lost seven games in a row and seem to be mimicking the Jets, as they are a team in turmoil searching for an identity and a franchise quarterback.

Offense

With quarterback Zach Mettenberger likely out for the season with a shoulder injury, the Titans will look to Jake Locker to finish up the season. Locker has been a disappointment for Tennessee, but remains a threat with both his arm and running ability.

The Titans offensive line is the team’s biggest issue as the unit has been leveled by injuries. Look for the Jets front seven to overwhelm Tennessee’s makeshift line and get after Locker. It would not be surprising to see a dominating performance by the New York defense, especially if Muhammad Wilkerson returns from injury.

Defense

The Titans field one of the worst defenses in the NFL as they are ranked 31st in points allowed, 30th in yards given up, and last against the run. The New York Jets should have a field day running the ball against Tennessee, which will then set up opportunities in the passing game. Expect to see a heavy dose of running back Chris Ivory, with Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell rotated in for a change of pace. In the passing game, the Jets could feature Jeremy Kerley as the veteran wide receiver has started to develop chemistry with Geno Smith.

Mental advantage?

The Tennessee Titans are starting to show signs of a team that has lost their fight. The offense is struggling to score points while the defense is having a tough time preventing them. Even though the Jets have the same record as the Titans, the team continues to play hard for head coach Rex Ryan. New York’s ground and pound approach could suck the life out of Tennessee early on which would lead to a much-needed victory for Gang Green.
