Protest Held In Brooklyn Over Planned Closer Of Early Childhood Education Program

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Students, parents and faculty of an early childhood education program protested Wednesday morning over the planned closure of the facility.

As 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported, The Guild for Exceptional Children's Carrie Mastronardi Early Childhood Education Program is set to shut down on Jan. 25, 2015.

The program, which serves special needs children and offers universal pre-kindergarten, has been losing money each year since 2009 and is now $2 million in the red.

Dozens of parents rallied outside of the state Department of Education office in Downtown Brooklyn, asking for help.

For Anna DeLeone, this is the second time her child has had to face a school closure this year.

"My child came from the Children's Center, which also closed," she said. "This is really a lot for a parent to bear."

Other parents said they have no idea what they'll do if the school closes.

"There's no such school around the area for these kids with special needs, so we don't know," one parent said.

The potential closure has teachers like Carolyn very upset.

"Just the thought of not finishing the school year, it hurts," she said tearfully. "We all work together. I mean, we really are a family. It breaks my heart."

Two hundreds students and 80 faculty are now hoping for some kind of holiday miracle.
